Bhopal Metro Nears Launch as Final Tests Await Approval

The Bhopal Metro is on the verge of commencing commercial operations, pending the final test report from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). This report, expected around August 15, 2023, will be pivotal in determining the Metro’s next steps, including an essential inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), which must occur before passenger services can begin.
During the recent testing phase, the RDSO team evaluated the Metro trains on several performance parameters. These tests included speed trials reaching the Metro’s maximum capability of 90 km/h and assessments of stability on curved sections of the track. The aim was to ensure that the trains meet safety and operational standards.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav highlighted that government hospitals are being equipped with the latest machines, reflecting a broader push for infrastructure improvements in the region.
Each Metro train consists of three coaches, designed to accommodate approximately 50 seated and 250 standing passengers per coach. To simulate real passenger loads during testing, the RDSO team used sacks weighing the equivalent of about 300 people placed inside each coach.
Testing took place between July 9 and July 21, 2023, focusing on the elevated stretch from Subash Nagar Metro Depot to AIIMS. Specific evaluations included oscillation control and emergency braking distance (EBD). A skilled team of RDSO experts from Lucknow utilized advanced testing equipment transported in a specially designed coach. They meticulously recorded key indicators such as ride quality, braking distance, and overall performance of the rolling stock.
With the testing phase now complete, the RDSO is in the process of analyzing the collected data. If the results align with the required standards, the Metro will advance to the CMRS inspection, paving the way for a full-scale launch.
Officials are optimistic about a commercial rollout scheduled for October 2023. The initial phase will feature service between eight elevated stations, running from Subash Nagar to AIIMS. The anticipation surrounding the Bhopal Metro marks a significant milestone in the city’s transport infrastructure, promising to enhance mobility for residents and visitors alike.
