Thousands Bid Farewell to Kerala’s Political Titan VS Achuthanandan

Former Kerala Chief Minister and prominent communist leader, VS Achuthanandan, was laid to rest on March 24, 2024, in a historic farewell that drew thousands of mourners to Alappuzha. His cremation took place at the Punnapra Memorial, following a 30-hour mourning procession that saw an unprecedented turnout of supporters and admirers.
As the night grew colder, nature reflected the somber mood. Mourners gathered, chanting the heartfelt slogan, “Kanne Karale VS,” while VA Arunkumar, Achuthanandan’s son, lit the funeral pyre, marking a poignant moment of remembrance. The pyre was positioned at the left side of the hall’s entrance, where police provided a guard of honor before the final rites. Despite the rain, supporters remained steadfast, continuing to shout revolutionary slogans, demonstrating their unwavering respect for the late leader.
The atmosphere was charged with emotion as attendees, including ministers and party leaders, paid their respects inside the hall. Many others, eager to express their grief, rushed to the vicinity of the pyre, momentarily breaking security protocols in their desire to honor their beloved comrade. The scene underscored the deep connection Achuthanandan had forged with the people of Kerala throughout his political career.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan praised Achuthanandan for his remarkable contributions to the state, stating, “The revolutionary style and organizational skills were the uniqueness of VS. He led the party without any hesitation during the crisis phases. VS is one among the few leaders who made his whole life a struggle for creating a new Kerala. He is a Renaissance leader.”
Achuthanandan’s legacy is multifaceted, characterized by his dedication to political activism and his commitment to social change. His influence extended beyond party lines, impacting the lives of many in Kerala. The mourning procession is a testament to the profound respect he garnered, illustrating the lasting impact he had on the state’s political landscape.
His passing marks the end of an era for Kerala’s communist movement, and as thousands gathered to pay their respects, it became clear that Achuthanandan’s spirit and ideals would continue to resonate in the hearts of many for years to come.
