Karun Nair Dropped from India’s Squad for Fourth Test Against England

Karun Nair’s hopes for a successful return to Test cricket have been dashed once again as he has been omitted from India’s squad for the crucial fourth Test against England. The announcement, made on July 23, 2025, follows Nair’s public appeal for another opportunity after a series of disappointing performances. Despite being given three chances to prove his worth, Nair struggled to convert promising starts into significant scores, ultimately leading to his exclusion.
The Indian lineup has undergone notable changes since the third Test. Sai Sudharsan has stepped in to replace Nair, while injuries have also affected the bowling unit. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep are out, paving the way for Shardul Thakur and Anshul Kamboj to join the team.
Nair’s performance in the initial three Tests was underwhelming. His highest score was a mere 40 runs in the first innings of the third Test. With lackluster contributions of 31, 26, 40, and 14 in his four innings, he failed to secure his place in the starting eleven. His dismissal in the second innings at Lord’s raised eyebrows, as he was adjudged out LBW after failing to adequately defend a delivery that struck his pads.
Mixed Reactions from Fans and Analysts
The announcement of Nair’s exclusion has elicited a wide range of responses from cricket fans online. Many supporters had hoped for a successful comeback after eight years since his last Test appearance. While some fans expressed disappointment, others understood the selectors’ decision.
One fan remarked, “Disappointed not to see Karun Nair in the XI today. But with the talent pool India has, and him getting three chances, maybe that was it. Unfortunate, but fair.” Another noted the challenges Nair faces moving forward: “Feel for Karun Nair that he’s been dropped but for him to make a comeback once again from here will be very difficult.”
Critics have pointed out that Nair’s extended opportunities did not yield the expected results. One observer commented, “End of Karun Nair’s Test career. At 32-33, there’s no likelihood for more chances now.” Another echoed this sentiment, highlighting the tough competition within the squad: “Test comebacks are really hard post-30 and will be judged harshly. I will be surprised if this management gives Karun Nair another chance.”
In contrast, supporters of the decision emphasized the need for performance-driven selections. A fan tweeted, “I totally endorse the decision of Gill & Gambhir to replace Karun Nair with Sai Sudharsan. Cricket has given Karun another chance, but he failed to capitalize on it.”
Future Prospects for Nair
As it stands, Nair’s prospects of rejoining the team appear slim. With the selectors set to finalize the squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies, it remains uncertain whether he will be included. The combination of his recent form and the competitiveness of the Indian batting lineup may hinder his return.
The cricketing community will be watching closely to see how Nair’s career unfolds moving forward. His remarkable achievement of scoring a triple century in his debut Test match remains a highlight of his career, but it is overshadowed by his recent struggles. For now, the focus shifts to the players stepping into crucial roles for the fourth Test against England.
