Young Man Trampled by Elephant in Kerala’s Attappadi Forest

A tragic incident occurred in the Attappadi region of Kerala on March 12, 2024, when a young man was trampled to death by a wild elephant. The victim, identified as Vellinkiri, aged 40, was a local resident of Attappadi. He had ventured into the forest to graze a cow but did not return, prompting concern among his family members and the community.
The search for Vellinkiri began after he failed to come back home on March 11. Local residents organized a search party that ultimately discovered his body in the forest. This incident marks a disturbing resurgence of wild animal attacks in the area, which had seen a brief lull in such occurrences prior to this tragedy.
Wild elephants are known to roam the forests of Kerala, often coming into conflict with local inhabitants. Authorities have expressed the need for increased safety measures to prevent future incidents. The attack underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities living near wildlife habitats, where human-animal interactions can lead to fatal outcomes.
Local officials have not yet released a statement detailing potential responses or preventive strategies in light of this incident. The community is left mourning the loss of Vellinkiri, who is remembered as a hardworking individual dedicated to his family and land.
As the investigation continues, residents are urged to exercise caution when venturing into the forested areas, particularly during the elephants’ active periods. This incident serves as a reminder of the complex relationship between wildlife and expanding human settlements in Kerala.

BRS Leader Calls for Action on Food Poisoning Crisis in Hostels

T. Harish Rao, a prominent leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has called for urgent government intervention to tackle a rising number of food poisoning incidents occurring in social welfare hostels across Telangana. Speaking at a party meeting in Sangareddy on October 16, 2023, Rao criticized Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for prioritizing political attacks over addressing pressing health issues.
According to Rao, food poisoning cases have emerged in several districts, including Sangareddy, Nagarkurnool, Jagtial, and Bhadradri-Kothagudem, over the past two days. He described the situation as a “tragic reflection of the ineptness of the Congress government.” Rao highlighted that the Chief Minister, who also holds the education portfolio, had previously promised to personally oversee the operations of government schools.
Rao’s remarks are particularly poignant given the alarming statistics surrounding student safety in these educational institutions. He noted that in the last 20 months, over 100 students in government gurukul schools have tragically lost their lives due to incidents related to food poisoning and snake bites. “At least now, the government must wake up and act to prevent such tragedies,” he urged.
The BRS leader expressed frustration over the Chief Minister’s apparent focus on criticizing the opposition rather than addressing the dire conditions faced by students in government-run hostels and schools. “Does the Chief Minister, who never misses a chance to attack the opposition, not see the plight of students?” Rao questioned. He further suggested that the neglect might stem from a desire to erase the legacy of former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, under whose administration these hostels and schools reportedly thrived.
Rao’s comments reflect a growing concern among parents and community members regarding the safety and welfare of students in government facilities. As food safety issues persist, the call for immediate government action becomes increasingly urgent. The BRS continues to advocate for reforms to ensure the protection and well-being of students across Telangana.

This significant event not only highlighted Achuthanandan’s commitment to his faith but also his dedication to the welfare of the pilgrims.
A Historic Climb and Hospital Inauguration

Achuthanandan was also present to inaugurate a new 20-bed hospital designed to address the medical needs of the thousands of devotees visiting the site.
During the climb, Achuthanandan demonstrated remarkable determination. Despite suggestions from companions, including Health Minister P. K. Sreemathy and local MLAs K. C. Rajagopalan and Raju Abraham, to take breaks, he persistently replied, “Don’t try to make me sit down.” His resolve resonated with many present, showcasing his unwavering spirit even at an advanced age.
Community Response and Legacy
The atmosphere at the temple was filled with a mix of reverence and light-heartedness, as those gathered chuckled when the loudspeakers announced the vedi vazhipadu for Achuthanandan’s longevity. This moment encapsulated the joy and communal spirit surrounding the event, drawing attention to the intersection of politics and spirituality in Kerala.
The following day, Achuthanandan made the return journey down the hill, marking a significant chapter in his political and personal journey. This activity allows individuals to uncover hidden treasures within urban environments while enjoying the advantages of physical exercise. As more people seek accessible fitness options, urban hiking offers surprising benefits that extend beyond mere physical activity.
Exploring Architectural Wonders
One of the most rewarding aspects of urban hiking is the opportunity to discover architectural marvels that often go unnoticed in the rush of daily life. Cities worldwide are home to an array of historical buildings, modern structures, and artistic installations that tell the stories of their past and present. By walking through neighborhoods, urban hikers can appreciate the diversity of architectural styles, gaining insight into the rich cultural heritage of their surroundings.
Health Benefits of Urban Hiking
Engaging in urban hiking serves as an effective way to enhance physical health without the need for a gym membership. Walking is a low-impact exercise that promotes cardiovascular fitness, strengthens muscles, and increases flexibility. Urban terrains often present diverse challenges, including stairs and slopes, further enhancing the workout experience.
Beyond physical fitness, urban hiking also supports mental wellbeing. The simple act of walking releases endorphins, which can significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels. Exploring new areas within a city not only invigorates the body but also stimulates the mind. As individuals venture into unfamiliar neighborhoods, they break free from the monotony of their daily routines, fostering curiosity and creativity.
Social interaction is another key benefit of urban hiking. This activity brings people together, whether through organized group hikes or spontaneous encounters with fellow walkers. Engaging in conversations while exploring familiar or new parts of the city can lead to meaningful connections and friendships.
As urban hikers traverse their routes, they often pass by local shops, cafes, and markets. This creates an opportunity to support small businesses by stopping for refreshments or browsing unique offerings along the way. Choosing local establishments over larger chains not only enhances the hiking experience but also contributes to the local economy.
Overall, urban hiking presents a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond exercise. It provides an avenue for architectural discovery, physical health improvement, and social interaction while fostering community connections and supporting local businesses. In a world where urban spaces continue to evolve, engaging in urban hiking can enrich the lives of those who choose to explore their surroundings on foot.
