Madhya Pradesh Government Increases Stipends for Junior Doctors
The Madhya Pradesh government has announced an increase in stipends for junior doctors and interns at government medical colleges across the state. This decision, confirmed by Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Rajendra Shukla, who oversees the health portfolio, will take effect on April 1, 2024.
Under the new stipends, first-year postgraduate (PG) doctors will see their stipend rise from ₹75,444 to ₹77,662. Second-year PG doctors will receive an increase from ₹77,764 to ₹80,050, while third-year PG doctors will have their stipend adjusted from ₹80,086 to ₹82,441. Intern doctors will also benefit, with their stipends going up from ₹13,928 to ₹14,337.
For those in the Super Specialty course, stipends have been standardized at ₹82,441 for all three years. Additionally, the stipend for senior residents has been raised from ₹88,210 to ₹90,803, while junior residents will receive a fixed stipend of ₹63,324.
The decision to increase stipends comes after junior doctors organized a strike lasting four days, advocating for better financial compensation. Their efforts have drawn attention to the working conditions and financial challenges faced by medical professionals in the state.
In recent years, medical staff across India have raised concerns regarding their remuneration and working conditions. The Madhya Pradesh government’s move could set a precedent for other states to consider similar adjustments, potentially impacting the healthcare sector nationwide.
The increase in stipends is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the demands of junior doctors and improving morale among healthcare professionals. As the healthcare system continues to navigate challenges, the government’s response may play a significant role in retaining talent within the medical field.
