Torrential Rains Cause Flash Flooding in New York and New Jersey

Heavy rainfall has resulted in severe flash flooding across parts of New York City and northern New Jersey on July 15, 2025, leading to emergency alerts and widespread disruption. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in response to the hazardous weather conditions, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for all five boroughs of New York City. By early evening, areas such as Staten Island and Manhattan recorded over an inch of rain. As storms continued to bring heavy rainfall, forecasts indicated the potential for further precipitation throughout the night.
In a social media post, Governor Murphy highlighted the gravity of the situation. He stated, “I am declaring a State of Emergency given flash flooding and high levels of rainfall in parts of the state. Please stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Stay safe, New Jersey.”
Authorities were particularly concerned for residents living in basement apartments, advising them to prepare for sudden evacuations. The New York City Emergency Management Agency reminded the public to stay alert, especially in flood-prone areas. They recommended keeping a phone, flashlight, and emergency kit nearby, ready to move to higher ground if necessary.
Emergency data revealed that as of 19:30 EDT, the Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan had experienced 1.47 inches of rainfall, while Staten Island recorded 1.67 inches. In New Jersey, towns such as Plainfield and Metuchen faced some of the most severe impacts from the flooding.
Throughout the evening, emergency crews were deployed across affected regions, focusing on public safety and rapid response efforts. As conditions remained precarious, authorities in both New York and New Jersey maintained a heightened state of alert, closely monitoring flood-prone areas and warning of the potential for worsening conditions.
Residents are urged to stay informed and heed official warnings as further rainfall is anticipated. The situation remains dynamic, with emergency management teams actively working to ensure safety and mitigate the impacts of this severe weather event.
