British Scientists Unveil Mini Robot to Inspect Large Hadron Collider

A team of British scientists has unveiled an innovative mini robot named PipeINEER, designed to inspect the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle collider located on the Swiss-French border. This collaboration between the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) marks a significant advancement in robotic technology for scientific applications.

At a compact size of just 3.7 cm wide and 20 cm long, the PipeINEER navigates autonomously through the narrow pipes of the 27 km collider. Its ability to operate in tight and extremely cold environments enhances the efficiency of inspections, a task that has traditionally posed challenges to human technicians. With its advanced imaging capabilities, the robot captures detailed photographs along the beamline and utilizes artificial intelligence to identify any deformities or issues within the system.

Nick Sykes, director of UKAEA’s robotics center, expressed pride in the project, highlighting the potential impact of this technology on CERN’s ongoing experiments. He stated, “By combining remote handling experience with CERN’s scientific excellence, we are ensuring the LHC operates safely and efficiently for years to come.” This collaboration aims to maintain the LHC’s integrity while allowing researchers to focus on groundbreaking scientific discoveries.

The LHC, operational since 2008, accelerates two beams of particles to nearly the speed of light before colliding them. These high-energy collisions have the potential to reveal new physics phenomena, including the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012. The collider relies on over 1,200 dipole magnets, which are crucial for steering particles around its circular tunnel. These magnets are maintained at a chilling -271°C, creating a challenging environment for human inspections.

Given the hazardous and hard-to-reach nature of these areas, CERN sought assistance from UKAEA’s robotics center in Culham. The PipeINEER robot is expected to revolutionize inspection and maintenance processes at the LHC, according to Dr Giuseppe Bregliozzi of CERN. He noted that this advancement represents a major step forward in ensuring the collider’s operations run smoothly and effectively.

The introduction of PipeINEER not only showcases the capabilities of modern robotics but also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between scientific entities in pushing the boundaries of knowledge and technology.
