Trump Anticipates Four-Week Duration for Iran Military Operation
The ongoing military operation involving the United States and Israel in Iran could conclude within approximately four weeks, according to US President Donald Trump. In an interview with the Daily Mail on March 1, 2024, Trump noted that while operations in such a large and powerful nation typically take around four weeks, he remains hopeful for an earlier resolution.
Trump made these remarks following a video statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he emphasized that the military action would continue until all objectives are met. “The military operation will run at full throttle and will not stop until all objectives are met,” he declared.
In a separate interview with The Atlantic on the same day, Trump claimed that Iranian leaders have expressed interest in discussions with him, stating, “They want to talk, and I am ready. It would have been better if they had done it earlier; now it’s too late.” When asked about the timeline for potential talks, Trump did not provide specifics but referenced the recent deaths of several Iranian officials involved in prior discussions as a significant setback.
Meanwhile, a White House official confirmed to Al Jazeera that President Trump is willing to engage with Iran’s new leadership, which reportedly seeks dialogue with the United States. The official indicated that the post-Khamenei leadership has shown a readiness for conversation.
On the diplomatic front, Oman‘s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement noting that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi informed Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi that Tehran is open to any initiative aimed at de-escalating tensions. Oman has previously served as a mediator in indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the US.
As these diplomatic efforts unfold, military actions escalated. On February 28, Israel launched an attack on Iran, followed by US involvement. Reports indicated explosions in Tehran and several other cities, prompting Iran to retaliate with missile and drone strikes targeting Israeli positions and US military bases across the Middle East. Explosions were reported in various nations, including Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society reported that as of March 1, at least 201 people have died and 747 have been injured in the ongoing conflict. Among the casualties are several high-ranking Iranian military officials, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, as well as other senior military personnel.
The US Central Command also reported losses, with three American soldiers killed and five seriously injured. Additionally, at least nine fatalities were confirmed in Beit Shemesh, Israel.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing clashes and the potential for further casualties and damage. As both military operations and diplomatic discussions progress, the international community watches closely for developments.
