India to Gradually Resume Visa Operations for Bangladesh
India has committed to gradually resuming full visa operations for Bangladesh, which have been restricted for nearly 18 months due to security concerns. This assurance was conveyed by Bangladesh’s Home Minister, Salahuddin Ahmed, following a meeting with the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, at the Home Ministry in Dhaka on October 15, 2023.
During the meeting, discussions focused on several key areas, including visa services, border management, security cooperation, and the broader scope of bilateral relations. Minister Ahmed clarified that the talks did not specifically address the reopening of tourist visas, which remain a point of interest for many travelers.
Minister Ahmed explained that India had experienced attacks on its consulates and visa offices during the past year and a half, which hindered their ability to operate effectively. “India informed us that its consulates and visa offices had faced attacks over the past one and a half years, which prevented them from functioning at full capacity,” he stated. He added that New Delhi expressed its intention to gradually normalize visa services.
This meeting marks part of a routine diplomatic courtesy following the establishment of Bangladesh’s new government. Minister Ahmed emphasized the importance of the relationship between the two nations, noting the extensive engagements they share in areas such as trade, commerce, travel, and security. “We want to maintain our relations on the basis of sovereign equality, mutual respect, and shared benefit,” he said, underscoring the need for continued cordial relations in all diplomatic and commercial engagements.
Border Security and Ongoing Dialogue
Border security emerged as a significant topic during discussions, particularly concerning incidents of cross-border killings, which have strained relations in the past. Minister Ahmed expressed Bangladesh’s desire for regular meetings between its border forces and Indian security agencies to address these issues. The two countries share a lengthy land border of 4,156 kilometers, making it the fifth-longest in the world. Periodic incidents along this frontier have previously led to tensions.
The Home Minister reiterated that sustained dialogue will be crucial for strengthening relations and preventing misunderstandings moving forward. He indicated Dhaka’s commitment to keeping communication channels open with New Delhi as both nations work towards stabilizing and deepening their cooperation.
As India and Bangladesh navigate their shared challenges, the gradual resumption of visa operations may serve as a foundation for further collaboration and trust-building between the neighboring countries.
