Kejriwal Claims Political Conspiracy After Court Discharge

Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating a conspiracy against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after he was cleared of charges in a high-profile liquor policy case. On February 27, 2024, a court discharged Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia, and 21 others, stating that the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) charge sheet was riddled with contradictions.

While addressing the media following the court’s decision, Kejriwal characterized the case as part of the “biggest political conspiracy” in the history of independent India. He commended the court for its courage in delivering the verdict, especially given what he described as an ongoing assault on democratic institutions. “The court has proved that Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and AAP are ‘Kattar Imaandar’ (staunchly honest),” he stated, expressing gratitude for the judicial relief.

Kejriwal’s remarks were accompanied by a celebration at his residence, where AAP supporters distributed sweets and danced in jubilation. The mood was festive, with party workers proclaiming “Holi has arrived early” as they celebrated what they viewed as a victory for truth and integrity.

In his statements, Kejriwal emphasized his lifelong commitment to honesty, claiming that the charges against him were a deliberate attempt by the BJP to undermine his reputation. He challenged Modi to call for fresh elections in Delhi, asserting that if the BJP secured more than ten seats, he would resign from politics altogether.

“This case has been a tool for BJP to distract from their failures in Delhi, including pollution and poor infrastructure,” he said, struggling with emotion as he reflected on the impact of the accusations on his family and personal life. Kejriwal recounted that he had been the first sitting chief minister to be jailed, a situation he described as unprecedented and unjust.

In a poignant moment, he remarked, “You have tried everything against me, yet you could not harm me. Now there is only one option left for you, Modiji—to eliminate me.” His comments were met with a chorus of “Satyamev Jayate” (Truth Alone Triumphs) from AAP leaders and supporters, reaffirming their belief in the party’s integrity.

Sisodia also expressed satisfaction with the court’s ruling, stating that it reaffirmed public faith in the Constitution. He noted that despite the BJP’s attempts to tarnish their reputation, the verdict had established the honesty of both him and Kejriwal.

The court’s decision is expected to bolster AAP’s morale as it prepares for upcoming elections, including the municipal corporation elections scheduled for next year. The party’s leaders believe this victory will strengthen their position against the BJP in the political landscape of Delhi.

Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, thanked the court for its bravery, emphasizing her husband’s dedication to honesty and progress. She criticized the BJP for what she described as a politically motivated campaign against her family.

As AAP leaders continue to celebrate their legal victory, they remain focused on the challenges ahead, including upcoming electoral contests that could shape the future of Delhi’s governance.
