Maharashtra Minister Pankaja Munde Addresses Air Quality Concerns
Maharashtra Environment Minister Pankaja Munde has urged citizens to be cautious about misleading information regarding air quality index (AQI) levels. Speaking in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Munde asserted that certain claims are intended to obstruct development projects across the state.
She emphasized the importance of relying on official AQI data provided through authenticated government sources. “Recently, someone told me that AQI levels are 600 in Mumbai,” Munde said. “I am asking people to follow sites or apps putting out authentic information and not get carried away by misleading data.”
Munde pointed out that Mumbai is experiencing significant growth, with various infrastructure projects underway. She remarked that the air pollution situation is notably better this year compared to the previous one.
Legislators Voice Concerns
During the session, Anil Parab, a legislator from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), reported that AQI levels at Kherwadi have been consistently around 320. Additionally, Bhai Jagtap, a Member of Legislative Council from the Congress party, expressed concerns about individuals flouting environmental regulations. He noted that while development is crucial, it must not come at the expense of environmental protection.
Munde reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing pollution issues and assured that action would be taken against those violating environmental norms. She informed the council that all development sites are required to install AQI monitoring systems that will display real-time data to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Commitment to Monitoring
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis acknowledged the necessity for comprehensive monitoring to effectively tackle pollution challenges. “Unless 100 percent monitoring is done, the desired results to tackle pollution will not be achieved,” he stated. Fadnavis emphasized that all development projects, whether public or private, must adhere to environmental regulations. He also highlighted the potential role of artificial intelligence technology in improving pollution management.
With these initiatives, the Maharashtra government aims to enhance transparency and accountability in air quality management while supporting ongoing development efforts.
