Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Centre Over Name Change for West Bengal
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Indian central government of neglecting her repeated requests to officially rename the state to ‘Bangla’. This statement follows the Union Cabinet’s recent decision to change Kerala’s name to Keralam. Banerjee’s remarks highlight ongoing tensions between state and central authorities regarding identity and representation.
On February 24, 2024, Banerjee expressed her frustration during a press briefing, claiming that the name change for Kerala reflects a growing alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)). “The alliance is no longer unwritten after today,” she stated, questioning why West Bengal continues to be overlooked. She emphasized her commitment to changing the state’s name, stating, “One day, you (BJP) will not be in power. We will get the name changed.”
Banerjee congratulated the people of Kerala on their new designation and drew attention to the fact that many states in India have successfully changed their names with the endorsement of their respective governments. She pointed out that despite the West Bengal Assembly adopting a resolution to change the name to ‘Bangla’, the Centre has not acted on this proposal.
This situation raises questions about the political dynamics between regional and central governments in India. Banerjee’s remarks suggest a perception of inequity in how name change proposals are handled, particularly in the context of the BJP’s influence over the central government.
As the Chief Minister continues to advocate for the name change, the political landscape in India remains complex, with alliances and rivalries shaping the discourse. The outcome of this situation could potentially impact the relationship between the state government and the Centre moving forward.
