Javed Akhtar Condemns Taliban’s New Laws on Domestic Violence

One of India’s foremost cultural voices, Javed Akhtar, has publicly condemned the Taliban’s recent legislation that endorses domestic violence. Reports indicate that the Taliban has legalized wife-beating, provided that it does not result in broken bones. Akhtar’s strong reaction highlights the profound moral implications of such a decree, which he describes as a shocking endorsement of violence.

In his remarks, Akhtar emphasized that this law reflects a blatant disregard for human rights, stating, “The impunity with which this so-called law legalizes violence is shocking to us not to them.” He called on Indian religious leaders, including muftis and mullahs, to unequivocally denounce the law, stressing that it is being enacted in the name of their faith. “Whatever the reason for this barbaric decree, let us not give any credence to it,” he urged.

He underscored the responsibility of filmmakers to project positive values in their work. “Cinema has a huge responsibility towards society to project the right values. And by ‘right’, I mean those values that give dignity, respect, and a voice to all sections of society.”
