Siliguri Hoteliers Lift Ban on Bangladeshi Tourists Following Diplomacy

In a notable development, the Greater Siliguri Hoteliers Welfare Association (GSHWA) in West Bengal has lifted its ban on accommodating Bangladeshi nationals in local hotels. This decision, announced on Monday, reflects improved diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh, particularly following the establishment of a democratically elected government in Bangladesh on February 17, 2024.

The ban, which was originally imposed on December 9, 2024, stemmed from rising regional tensions. Local hoteliers expressed concerns over incidents involving disrespect towards the Indian flag and inflammatory remarks made by certain Bangladeshi officials. However, with recent diplomatic engagements signaling a shift towards cooperation, the GSHWA recognized the need to reverse the restrictions on Bangladeshi guests.

Ujjal Ghosh, Joint Secretary of the GSHWA, articulated the association’s rationale behind the initial prohibition. He noted that the circumstances at that time warranted such a measure, yet he now expressed optimism about a renewed sense of normalcy between the two nations. Ghosh highlighted the potential economic benefits of welcoming Bangladeshi tourists back to Siliguri, a region well-known for its hospitality.

Diplomatic Improvements Influence Decision

The easing of restrictions aligns with a broader trend of positive diplomatic engagement between India and Bangladesh. Following the swearing-in ceremony of the new Bangladeshi government, which was attended by Indian officials, the association felt that the conditions were suitable for lifting the ban. Comprising around 250 hotels, the GSHWA expects all its members to comply with the new directive.
