Trump Claims 200% Tariff Threat Averted 2024 India-Pakistan War
US President Donald Trump has asserted that his threat to impose a 200 percent tariff on India and Pakistan played a crucial role in halting a potential conflict between the two nations in 2024. Speaking at his Board of Peace, Trump claimed that his financial leverage led to a ceasefire, stating, “There’s nothing like money” to motivate both countries to back down from military engagement.
During his remarks, Trump increased the number of military jets reportedly shot down during the conflict from eight to 11. He emphasized his role in mediating the situation, stating that he contacted Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan to resolve the escalating tensions. Trump recounted, “When it came to losing a lot of money, they said, I guess we don’t want to fight.”
Background of the Conflict
The conflict referenced by Trump arose following the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals. In response, India launched targeted strikes on Pakistan’s terrorist infrastructure as part of Operation Sindoor. This operation aimed to curb terrorist activities emanating from Pakistan, escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries.
Trump’s assertion that he played a key role in averting war has received mixed reactions. While he claims credit for the ceasefire, India has consistently denied any third-party mediation. Officials from India maintain that the ceasefire was achieved through direct communication between military leaders, specifically the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs).
Praise and Rebuttal
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Trump for his alleged mediation efforts, calling him a “man of peace” and a “saviour of the people of South Asia.” He remarked, “Your timely and very effective intervention to achieve a ceasefire potentially averted the loss of millions of people’s lives.”
In contrast, Indian officials have reiterated their position that all matters with Pakistan, including contentious issues like Jammu and Kashmir, should be resolved through bilateral dialogue, emphasizing the importance of direct communication without external interference.
As the narrative surrounding this conflict develops, the differing accounts from both leaders underscore the complexities of international diplomacy in South Asia. Trump’s claims and the responses from Indian and Pakistani leaders highlight ongoing tensions and the delicate balance of power in the region.
