TMC MP Mahua Moitra Seeks Custody of Dog Henry in Delhi Court
Mahua Moitra, a Member of Parliament representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has approached the Delhi High Court in a bid to secure custody of her pet Rottweiler, named Henry. The court has issued a notice to her former partner, Jai Anant Dehadrai, prompting him to respond to Moitra’s petition. The case highlights an ongoing dispute over the pet that has drawn public attention.
Details of the Court Proceedings
The notice was issued by Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri, who has scheduled a hearing for April 29, 2026. Moitra’s legal action follows a prior decision by the Saket Court on November 10, 2025, which denied her request for a 10-day monthly custody arrangement for Henry. During the court proceedings, Dehadrai appeared personally, asserting that Moitra’s petition should be dismissed at the outset.
Moitra has challenged the Saket Court’s ruling, claiming it is flawed both legally and factually. She contends that Henry primarily resides with her, except during her official duties outside of Delhi, when the dog stays with Dehadrai. This claim is central to her argument for custody.
In a previous court decision, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to Moitra regarding an appeal from Dehadrai. This appeal involved a directive preventing public discussion of the custody case, which remains unresolved. Justice Manoj Jain presided over that matter, requiring Moitra to submit her response.
Background of the Custody Dispute
The custody dispute over Henry began after Dehadrai purchased the dog in 2021. Moitra’s plea before the High Court asserts that her bond with Henry justifies her claim for custody. The ongoing legal battle reflects a growing trend of pet custody disputes in family law, highlighting the emotional significance pets hold for their owners.
As the case progresses, both parties will present their arguments regarding the welfare of Henry. The outcome will not only affect the two individuals involved but also sets a precedent for similar future cases in India. With the next hearing date set, attention will remain on how the court navigates this unique aspect of personal relationships and pet ownership.
