Neighbour Arrested for Murdering 70-Year-Old in Bengaluru
A 70-year-old woman was found dead in her home in Nelamangala, a suburb of Bengaluru, on March 15, 2024. The victim, identified as Shobha, was reportedly strangled while her husband, who is wheelchair-bound, was present in the house during the incident. Authorities arrested a neighbour, Shivakumar, within hours of the crime, suspecting him of murder and theft.
According to police reports, Shobha had been caring for her husband, who has been bedridden since suffering a brain stroke 12 years ago. The couple lived on Pete Beedi in Nelamangala and had no children. Investigators believe that Shivakumar, aged 36, approached the residence under the guise of asking for water, having noticed the gold jewellery Shobha was wearing.
The attack occurred around 16:00 IST, shortly after Shobha returned home. Police stated that Shivakumar allegedly assaulted her with a knife before strangling her and escaping with more than 100 grams of gold jewellery.
Rapid Police Response and Investigation
The Nelamangala Town Police quickly registered a murder case and began reviewing CCTV footage from the area. This footage proved crucial in tracking down the suspect, who was apprehended within six hours of the crime. Reports indicate that CCTV captured Shivakumar fleeing the scene on a motorcycle shortly after the incident.
In a notable turn of events, sources revealed that Shivakumar returned to the crime scene while police were conducting their initial investigation. Disguising himself as a bystander to deflect suspicion, he blended into the crowd before leaving the area on his Activa scooter. Police later traced the vehicle’s registration details directly to him.
As part of the ongoing investigation, law enforcement officials seized the scooter, the knife believed to be the murder weapon, and Shivakumar’s mobile phone. These items are expected to serve as key evidence in the case against him.
Community Shock and Safety Concerns
The murder of Shobha has sent shockwaves through the Nelamangala community, raising concerns about safety and crime in the area. Residents expressed disbelief that such a violent act could occur in their neighborhood, where many families have lived for generations.
As the investigation continues, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Police have also emphasized the importance of community cooperation in preventing such tragedies in the future.
This tragic incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by elderly individuals, particularly those caring for disabled spouses. The case will be closely monitored as it unfolds in the coming days.
