Villagers Unite to Raise ₹45 Lakh for Water Solutions in Vadgam

Residents of Kanodar village in Vadgam taluka, located in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat, have successfully raised ₹45 lakh through community efforts to address their longstanding water crisis. Over a span of six months, approximately 15,000 villagers came together to construct five recharge wells and two tube wells, marking a significant achievement in local self-reliance and unity.

The initiative emerged in response to years of severe water scarcity and waterlogging that plagued the village. According to Dilip Salvi, the village sarpanch, previous attempts to seek assistance from government authorities yielded little action. “We sought help from various government authorities, but no action was taken due to their lackadaisical approach,” Salvi stated. This prompted the youth of Kanodar to take matters into their own hands.

Community Efforts and Fundraising

The fundraising campaign began with a door-to-door initiative led by local youth, encouraging every household to contribute according to their capacity. The campaign was inclusive, with participation from both the Muslim and Hindu communities, which comprise approximately 65% and 35% of the village population, respectively. Local businessman Yasin Banglawala emphasized the motivation behind the project, recalling the area’s severe water issues. “So much rainwater used to accumulate here that people’s homes would be inundated with two feet of water,” he explained.

The innovative idea to create recharge wells aimed to utilize the excess rainwater constructively. Villagers conducted a survey and identified seven or eight old, unused wells. As a pilot project, they decided to deepen two of these wells, hiring a team to facilitate the recharging process.

Salvi noted that the successful implementation of the initial recharge wells inspired further expansion of the project. “We now have five recharge wells and two water tube wells. It’s already helping with groundwater levels,” he remarked.

Future Plans and Government Engagement

Looking ahead, Salvi expressed plans for the village committee to approach local government authorities for potential reimbursement of the funds spent by villagers for this public benefit project. The community’s collective effort stands as a testament to their resilience and determination to solve pressing issues without waiting for external assistance.

This initiative not only addresses immediate water needs but also sets a precedent for sustainable water management practices in rural areas facing similar challenges. The villagers of Kanodar have demonstrated that with collaboration and commitment, significant improvements can be achieved in local infrastructure and community welfare.
