India’s merchandise exports experienced a slight increase of 0.61 percent in January 2024, reaching USD 36.56 billion. The announcement came from Rajesh Agrawal, the Commerce Secretary, who highlighted the performance during a press briefing on Monday. This uptick marks a modest progression in the country’s export activities.

In contrast, imports surged significantly by 19.2 percent, totaling USD 71.24 billion for the same month, up from USD 59.77 billion in January 2023. This sharp rise in imports contributed to a trade deficit of USD 34.68 billion for January.

Trade Performance Insights

Agrawal noted that despite the challenges, India’s exports continue to exhibit growth, stating that they “remain northwards” in both goods and services. He expressed optimism regarding the fiscal year, projecting that exports of goods and services are likely to surpass USD 860 billion.

For the period spanning April to January, India’s total exports rose by 2.22 percent, amounting to USD 366.63 billion. This figure underscores the resilience of the country’s export sector amid fluctuating global market conditions.

Analysts suggest that the increase in imports may reflect a recovering domestic demand, as businesses replenish inventories and consumers drive demand for foreign goods. The ongoing challenges in the global economy, however, could impact future export performance, necessitating careful monitoring of market dynamics.

As India continues to navigate its trade landscape, the government’s focus on enhancing export capabilities and diversifying markets will be critical in achieving long-term economic growth.
