YouTuber Ruchi Tiwari Alleges Assault During Delhi University Protest
A protest at Delhi University’s North Campus escalated into chaos on February 14, 2026, when YouTuber and self-identified journalist Ruchi Tiwari alleged that she was attacked and threatened by a “mob of nearly 500 people.” Tiwari claimed that while covering a demonstration concerning the UGC Equity Regulations, she faced physical assault and was subjected to rape threats, including the disturbing phrase, “aaj tu chal, tera nanga parade niklega,” which translates to “today you walk, your naked parade will happen.”
The incident occurred during a demonstration at the Arts Faculty, where tensions rose after some individuals in the crowd questioned Tiwari about her full name and caste identity. Tiwari asserted she was present solely to report on the protest, stating, “Video is everywhere, people can judge by themselves as to who provoked whom,” emphasizing that she did not instigate the confrontation.
Tiwari reported that she was surrounded, held by the arms and neck, and faced inappropriate touching. She alleged that women in the crowd whispered threats in her ear, and a man signaled to others to take her away, raising her fears of abduction. Describing the ordeal as “an attempt to murder,” she claimed she lost consciousness during the attack and criticized the police for their lack of action.
Accusations of Caste Targeting and Political Tensions
The incident has sparked intense debate, particularly regarding allegations of caste-based targeting. Tiwari, who identifies as a Brahmin, suggested that the crowd’s hostility escalated when her caste was mentioned. She characterized those involved as “goons” and accused them of spreading misinformation to justify their actions. The sensitive nature of caste discourse within universities has further complicated the narrative surrounding this incident.
In response to the attack, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) condemned the actions against Tiwari, labeling it an assault on media freedom. Sarthak Sharma, the ABVP Delhi state secretary, described the incident as a “cowardly act” and attributed the violence to Left-affiliated groups, urging the Delhi Police and university administration to take strict action.
Conversely, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) dismissed Tiwari’s allegations. Prasenjeet Kumar, the national general secretary of AISA, claimed that Tiwari instigated the situation by pushing another YouTuber from the Bahujan community. AISA maintained that students had gathered peacefully to support the UGC regulations and accused ABVP of trying to incite conflict.
Calls for Investigation Amid Political Fallout
As videos of the confrontation spread across social media, demands for an impartial investigation intensified. Both the ABVP and AISA have exchanged accusations, with each party blaming the other for the violence. At this time, the Delhi Police and university authorities have not released a comprehensive statement detailing the events.
This incident has reignited discussions about campus safety, media freedom, and political tensions within Delhi University. The allegations of assault and rape threats have raised significant concerns regarding the environment for journalists reporting on student protests. As the investigation unfolds, the outcome may have lasting implications for the politically charged atmosphere on campus.
Tiwari is known for her independent journalism, operating a YouTube channel titled Breaking Opinion, where she covers a range of topics, including political debates and social issues. Her reporting often places her at the forefront of contentious discussions, and she has faced criticism from various student groups for her provocative style. The unfolding situation not only highlights the challenges faced by journalists in India but also emphasizes the complex interplay of caste, politics, and media freedom in academic settings.
