Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga has revealed the intricate design behind the action sequences featuring Ranbir Kapoor in his latest film, Animal. With the film continuing to generate interest three years post-release, it is set for a grand premiere in Japan. Vanga recently discussed how he meticulously crafted these iconic fight scenes, linking them directly to the film’s narrative.

Creative Process Behind the Action Sequences

During a recent press conference, Vanga elaborated on the creative process for the film’s action sequences, particularly the nearly 19-minute interval where Kapoor’s character, Ranvijay Singh, confronts a formidable army of assassins. Vanga emphasized that the action was more than mere spectacle; it served as a crucial narrative element that illustrated the character’s physical decline in the film’s second half.

“I wanted Ranvijay Singh to seem injured in the first part of the second half, where he was getting treated,” Vanga explained. “So for that, the action has to be gory and serious and real, so that he’ll be injured enough and he’ll be sitting at home doing nothing.” This intentional approach towards violence was designed to enhance the emotional weight of the story.

Structuring the Combat for Engagement

To maintain audience engagement throughout this extended sequence, Vanga opted to divide the combat into distinct stages. He designed the fights to include various weapons and tactics, creating a multi-layered battle. “Based on that thought, I got this idea of designing the fight in facets, like one with the axe, one with the machine gun, and one with that big machine where he is sitting and shooting,” he noted.

This structured approach not only kept the action exciting but also allowed the screenplay to naturally flow toward the protagonist’s vulnerability. In addition to the fight choreography, Vanga also made notable aesthetic choices that contributed to the scene’s impact. The use of eerie animal masks and the integration of traditional music with intense action were all deliberate choices aimed at enhancing the film’s unique visual identity.

“See, usually what happens is when you are making a film, the fighters who come to fight are not the real characters; it’s the choreographer’s team. I wanted to hide their faces, so we got animal masks, and it looked a little different,” Vanga explained. He also incorporated a Marathi song to further enrich the visual experience.

Animal, produced by T-Series and Bhadrakali Pictures, explores the complex and toxic relationship between Ranvijay and his father, played by Anil Kapoor. While the film has faced criticism for its graphic violence, its box office success remains undeniable. Alongside Kapoor, the film features a stellar supporting cast, including Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Triptii Dimri.

With its upcoming release in Japan, Vanga’s vision of a “gory and serious” narrative continues to resonate with audiences globally, solidifying Animal as a significant work in contemporary cinema.
