Boeing Secures Order for 20 737 MAX 8s from Air Cambodia
Boeing has officially confirmed an order for up to 20 737 MAX 8 aircraft from Air Cambodia. Initially placed in December 2025, the order was previously attributed to an unidentified customer. Now, it is clear that Air Cambodia, the Southeast Asian airline founded in 2009, will receive 10 firm orders, with options for another 10. This significant acquisition marks the airline’s largest single-aisle order to date.
Air Cambodia, the flag carrier of Cambodia, aims to enhance its fleet with the addition of these 737 MAX 8s. The aircraft will replace parts of its existing fleet, which includes the A320 family and ATR 72 models, as the airline expands its international services to destinations such as Vietnam, India, Thailand, China, Japan, and Hong Kong.
A Focus on Fuel Efficiency and Sustainability
The decision to select the Boeing 737 MAX 8 is driven by its fuel efficiency. According to Boeing, Air Cambodia will experience a 20% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the A320s currently in service. This reduction not only lowers operational costs but also contributes to a smaller carbon footprint, enhancing the airline’s sustainability commitments.
Dr. David Zhan, CEO of Air Cambodia, emphasized the benefits of the 737 MAX 8, stating, “The 737-8 gives Air Cambodia the ideal combination of range, capacity, and fuel efficiency to support our next phase of growth. This investment will let us launch direct services to important markets across North and Southeast Asia, offering competitively priced travel for passengers while creating local jobs and training opportunities that strengthen our communities.”
Expanding Fleet with Additional Orders
The confirmation of the Boeing order is part of a broader strategy by Air Cambodia to modernize its fleet. In September 2025, the airline also placed an order for the COMAC C909, expected to include 10 firm orders with options for an additional 10. The C909, a smaller regional jet, is designed to carry between 78 and 97 passengers, positioning it as a competitor to the Embraer family of aircraft.
Current fleet data from Cirium indicates that there are 177 COMAC C919 aircraft in service globally. Air Cambodia’s order for the C909 is seen as a strategic move to diversify its offerings in the regional market.
As of February 2026, Air Cambodia has scheduled 1,268 flights, with a mix of services from both the A320 family and ATR 72 family. The airline operates routes to 17 destinations, with Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam being the most frequently serviced location, featuring 187 flights throughout the month.
This expansion reflects Air Cambodia’s commitment to enhancing its operational capacity and providing more travel options for its customers. With the introduction of the new 737 MAX 8s and the C909s, the airline is poised for significant growth in a competitive aviation market.
