Communities Unite to Celebrate 127th Anniversary of Field Marshal Cariappa

The 127th birth anniversary of Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa was commemorated on March 5, 2024, across the Kodagu district in India. The celebrations were organized by the district administration in collaboration with various departments, culminating in a ceremony at the Field Marshal Cariappa Statue Circle in Madikeri.

Students from local schools, National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, and ex-servicemen participated in a march past, leading to the statue where dignitaries paid their respects with floral tributes. Among those speaking at the event was former minister MC Nanaiah, who emphasized the importance of Field Marshal Cariappa’s legacy as a source of inspiration for the younger generation.

A subsequent ceremony took place at ‘Roshanara’, the residence of Field Marshal Cariappa in Madikeri, where his son, Air Marshal Nanda Cariappa (retd), also paid tribute. He urged that every citizen should prioritize service to the nation, particularly in times when the influence of technology, such as artificial intelligence, is growing. “It is essential to verify information carefully,” he stated, highlighting the importance of informed decision-making.

Field Marshal Cariappa’s daughter, Nalini Cariappa, was present at the event, underscoring the family’s ongoing commitment to honoring his legacy. The ceremony included a narration of Cariappa’s life story, captivating students from Sainik School, Kodagu Vidyalaya, and other educational institutions.

The birth anniversary was not limited to Madikeri, as celebrations also took place in towns across Kodagu, including Virajpet, Somwarpet, and Hudikeri. Students from Cauvery College in Gonikoppal participated by offering tributes to the statues of Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimayya, reinforcing the communal spirit surrounding the event.

In addition, reverence was paid at the Cariappa Memorial Library in Shanivarsanthe, the birthplace of Field Marshal Cariappa, during a gathering organized by the FMKM Cariappa Club. The diverse activities reflect a deep respect for the contributions of Field Marshal Cariappa to the nation.
