Glenn Phillips Hits 100 T20I Sixes, Joins Elite Kiwi Trio
New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips has made history by becoming the third batter from his country to smash 100 sixes in T20 Internationals. He achieved this milestone during the fourth T20I against India at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on March 4, 2024. Phillips hit his only six of the match while contributing a quick 24 runs off just 16 balls before being dismissed by spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
This achievement places Phillips alongside fellow New Zealanders Martin Guptill and Colin Munro, who have also reached the 100 sixes mark in T20I cricket, with Guptill leading the pack at 173 sixes and Munro at 107. Notably, Phillips reached his milestone in just 78 innings and 87 matches, showcasing his explosive batting style.
In the same series, Phillips had previously dazzled fans with a remarkable 40-ball 78 in the series opener, which helped him surpass the 2,000-run milestone in T20 cricket. As of now, he has accumulated a total of 2,098 runs at an average of 31.78 and an impressive strike rate of 141.66. His scoring prowess includes 11 half-centuries and two centuries.
Phillips’ performance against India has been notable. Across 15 matches against the Indian side, he has scored 304 runs at an average of 23.38. According to data from ESPNcricinfo, he recently became the fourth New Zealander to reach the 2,000-run milestone in T20I cricket, joining Guptill, Kane Williamson (2,575 runs), and Brendon McCullum (2,140 runs).
In total, Phillips has played 276 T20 matches, accumulating 7,093 runs from 257 innings. His statistics include 46 fifties and 5 tons, highlighting his status as one of the leading players in the format. With the six he hit in the fourth T20I, his overall tally now stands at 378 sixes across all T20 matches.
Glenn Phillips continues to solidify his position as a key player for New Zealand in the T20 format, and his recent achievements signal a promising future for this dynamic batter.
