Xi Jinping Celebrates India’s Republic Day, Highlights Ties
Chinese President Xi Jinping extended warm greetings to India on its 77th Republic Day this week, characterizing the two nations as “good neighbours, friends and partners.” This statement, reported by the official Xinhua news agency, reflects ongoing improvements in India–China relations. Xi’s message included the metaphor of the “dragon and the elephant dancing together,” a phrase often used in China to describe the relationship between the two countries.
In his address, Xi noted that the past year has seen significant progress in China–India relations, which he deemed essential for promoting global peace and prosperity. He emphasized the importance of both nations expanding their exchanges and cooperation, addressing mutual concerns, and striving for stable bilateral relations.
Tensions and Recovery
India and China share a border that spans approximately 3,800 kilometres, a region fraught with disputes dating back to the 1950s. Relations hit a low point following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh, a confrontation that arose from Chinese military aggression. Subsequently, China acknowledged the loss of four of its soldiers in the conflict, which resulted in increased militarization along the Himalayan frontier.
Xi’s recent comments come as bilateral relations appear to be on a path to recovery after nearly four years of heightened tension. Diplomatic efforts to stabilize ties gained momentum last year, highlighted by a meeting between Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024. Since that meeting, New Delhi and Beijing have been engaged in ongoing dialogue aimed at managing their differences and rebuilding diplomatic ties.
Direct flights between the two countries resumed in 2025, and there has been a notable increase in trade and investment. Despite lingering differences and strategic competition, officials on both sides report that relations are maintaining a positive trajectory.
Celebrations of Independence
India’s Republic Day, celebrated on January 26, marks the adoption of its Constitution in 1950. This day represents the culmination of India’s struggle for independence and the establishment of constitutional governance founded on principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. The observance of Republic Day serves as a reminder of India’s democratic values and the significance of its constitutional framework.
As diplomatic channels continue to open, the future of India–China relations seems poised for further development, with both nations recognizing the importance of cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
