Modi Commemorates Soldiers at National War Memorial on Republic Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tributes to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial in New Delhi on January 26, 2026, marking the 77th Republic Day of India. Accompanied by the chief of defence staff and the three Service chiefs, Modi led the solemn ceremony, laying a wreath in honour of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Upon arrival at the memorial, Modi was welcomed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The ceremony began with military officers presenting a salute, while dignitaries present observed a poignant two-minute silence to pay their respects. This moment of reflection was a powerful reminder of the bravery and commitment displayed by the soldiers.
As the silence concluded, the sound of buglers playing the ‘Rouse’ signalled the end of the remembrance period. The ceremony then transitioned into the concluding formalities, with the Guard Commander issuing the order for ‘Salami Shastra’, a traditional salute by the armed forces, which marked the end of the commemorative event.
This observance at the National War Memorial is a significant aspect of India’s Republic Day celebrations, reflecting the country’s deep respect for its military personnel. The memorial, dedicated to those who have served, stands as a symbol of national pride and remembrance.
The presence of India’s top military officials alongside the Prime Minister underscored the unity and commitment of the nation towards honouring its heroes. As India continues to celebrate its democratic values and the sacrifices that have shaped its journey, such tributes serve to reinforce the importance of acknowledging those who have laid down their lives for the country.
The Republic Day celebrations, which include parades and cultural displays across the nation, also highlight the diverse heritage and achievements of India. The tribute at the National War Memorial remains a solemn yet integral part of these festivities, reminding citizens of the sacrifices made in the name of freedom and sovereignty.
