India Votes Against UN Resolution on Iran, Tehran Expresses Gratitude
India has opposed a resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) that criticized Iran for its handling of nationwide protests. This decision prompted an expression of gratitude from Tehran, which acknowledged India’s support during a special session of the Council. Despite the diplomatic engagement, India has simultaneously issued a travel advisory for its citizens considering trips to Iran amidst escalating regional tensions.
Details of the UNHRC Resolution
The UNHRC resolution, adopted during its 39th special session, received support from 25 countries, while seven nations, including India, voted against it. The resolution highlighted concerns regarding Iran’s response to protests that began on December 28, 2022, pointing to reports of deaths, injuries, and extensive arrests during the unrest.
In a statement on social media platform X, Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, expressed appreciation for India’s decision, describing it as a principled stance that respects Iran’s sovereignty and aligns with multilateralism. He characterized the resolution as “politically motivated,” thanking the Indian government for its support.
Implications of the UNHRC Vote
The resolution not only condemned Iran’s actions but also extended the mandate of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran for an additional two years. Furthermore, the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran was extended for one year. The Council called for urgent investigations into the management of the protests and urged Iranian authorities to uphold international human rights standards, including preventing arbitrary detentions and violence against peaceful demonstrators.
India’s vote came shortly after a conversation between Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. The two leaders discussed the evolving regional dynamics and recent developments in and around Iran.
In light of the situation, India issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iran until further notice. The advisory emphasized the need for Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin currently in Iran to exercise caution, stay away from protest areas, and remain updated on local developments. Additionally, those not registered with the Indian Embassy in Tehran were encouraged to do so promptly.
This diplomatic engagement between India and Iran underscores the complexities of international relations, especially regarding human rights issues and regional stability. As the situation in Iran continues to develop, both nations are navigating their positions carefully in this sensitive landscape.
