Mamata Banerjee Launches 49th Kolkata Book Fair, Highlights Challenges
Kolkata’s literary scene received a significant boost as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the 49th Kolkata International Book Fair on Thursday. The event showcases a diverse array of publications and serves as a cultural gathering point for book lovers. Banerjee emphasized the importance of literature in uniting people throughout history.
During her address, Banerjee announced the release of her latest work, a collection of poems titled “Agony Faced by People Due to SIR,” which marks her 162nd publication. The anthology, consisting of 26 poems, reflects on the distress caused by the Sikkim Integrated Road (SIR) project, which has reportedly led to the loss of 110 lives due to anxiety related to the initiative.
Concerns Over Bureaucratic Procedures
In her speech, Banerjee addressed the ongoing issues surrounding identity verification, particularly for elderly residents. She criticized the Election Commission for questioning Bengali surnames, asserting that names like Banerjee and Chatterjee can also be spelled as Bandhopadhyay and Chattopadhyay. She highlighted that many older individuals struggle to provide proof of birth, a requirement that poses challenges for those who grew up in an era without institutional birth records.
Banerjee also mentioned the harassment faced by renowned economist and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, pointing out the broader implications of identity issues affecting prominent figures in society.
Book Fair Highlights and Economic Impact
The Kolkata International Book Fair serves not only as a platform for literature but also as an economic driver for the region. Last year’s fair attracted a staggering attendance, generating over Rs. 27 crore in business. Banerjee noted that the event drew several lakh visitors, reinforcing its status as a key cultural event in the calendar.
This year, the fair will run until February 3, 2024, with Argentina as the theme country. The inclusion of international themes aims to enrich the cultural exchange and broaden the horizons of attendees.
As the fair unfolds, it will continue to be a focal point for literature enthusiasts, fostering a deeper appreciation for written works and addressing contemporary issues through the lens of creativity and expression.
