Surgeons Perform Complex Heart Surgery on BBS Patient in Hyderabad
Doctors at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad have successfully conducted a complex heart surgery on a 25-year-old woman diagnosed with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS), a genetic condition impacting multiple organ systems. The patient, identified as Pallavi, had been suffering from severe breathlessness and palpitations for a period of ten days before being referred to Gandhi Hospital for advanced treatment.
Following consultations at several private healthcare facilities, Pallavi was transferred from MGM Hospital in Warangal. Medical evaluations confirmed her diagnosis of BBS, which included various associated conditions such as polydactyly, red cone dystrophy (also known as retinitis pigmentosa), central obesity, intellectual disability, and Type 1 diabetes.
Upon further cardiac investigations, doctors discovered a significant defect known as an ostium primum atrial septal defect (ASD) measuring 14.7 mm. Additionally, there was evidence of severe mitral regurgitation (MR). A more detailed examination revealed a larger ASD measuring 2.5 cm × 2 cm along with a cleft in the anterior mitral leaflet. The patient’s ejection fraction was recorded at 65 percent, indicating the heart’s pumping efficiency.
Intricate Surgical Procedure Successfully Executed
The surgical team, led by Dr. Ravindra, Head of the Cardiothoracic and Pulmonary Surgery Department, performed a highly intricate operation. The procedure involved a repair of the mitral valve anterior leaflet, pericardial annuloplasty, and closure of the ostium primum ASD.
Dr. Vani, the superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, confirmed the success of the operation and praised the medical team for their dedication and skill in handling such a complex case. The successful surgery not only highlights the capabilities of the healthcare professionals at Gandhi Hospital but also underscores the importance of specialized care for patients with rare conditions like Bardet-Biedl Syndrome.
Pallavi’s case is a reminder of the challenges faced by individuals with genetic disorders and the essential role of advanced medical interventions. The successful outcome of this surgery not only improves Pallavi’s quality of life but also offers hope to others with similar health issues.
