Iran Warns of Retaliation Against US Bases Amid Protests
Iran has issued a stark warning to neighboring countries hosting US military bases, stating that American facilities could be targeted if the United States intervenes in ongoing protests within Iran. This threat follows statements from US President Donald Trump, who has expressed support for the demonstrators amid a widespread crackdown by Iranian security forces.
The warning was conveyed by a senior Iranian official to Reuters on Wednesday. Protests have erupted across Iran, leading to civil unrest, and the Iranian government has responded with severe measures. In light of the escalating tensions, some US personnel have reportedly been advised to vacate Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the primary American air base in the region. However, sources indicate that this is more of a “posture change” rather than a full-scale evacuation, as no significant troop movements have been observed.
Trump has reiterated his willingness to take “very strong action” against Iran if the government continues its crackdown on protesters. In a recent interview with CBS News, he encouraged Iranians to persist in their demonstrations, suggesting that “help is on the way,” although he did not provide specifics on potential US actions.
Israeli officials have interpreted Trump’s remarks as an indication that he may intervene in the situation, though details regarding the timing and extent of such actions remain unclear. In response, Tehran has reached out to its regional allies, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey, urging them to dissuade Washington from taking further action. The Iranian official stated, “Tehran has told regional countries that U.S. bases in those countries will be attacked.”
Diplomatic relations between Iran and the United States appear to have further deteriorated, with direct contacts between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff reportedly suspended. Iranian state media has reported discussions among senior officials with counterparts in Qatar, the UAE, and Turkey regarding the rising tensions in the region.
Iran has accused both the United States and Israel of inciting the ongoing unrest. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), over 2,400 protesters have been killed, and more than 18,000 arrests have been documented as authorities attempt to quell dissent. Iranian officials dispute these figures, emphasizing their stance against foreign interference.
As the situation continues to evolve, the potential for conflict in the region remains high, with both sides on alert for any developments that could further escalate tensions. The international community watches closely as Iran reiterates its position against US involvement in its internal affairs.
