Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Governors Forge New Cooperation Pact
The Governors of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim met to explore new avenues for bilateral cooperation, focusing on cultural, social, and developmental initiatives. K T Parnaik of Arunachal Pradesh and Om Prakash Mathur of Sikkim convened at Lok Bhavan in Gangtok on January 13, 2023, during Parnaik’s three-day visit to the Himalayan state.
During the discussions, Parnaik emphasized the rich cultural heritage and ethnic diversity of Arunachal Pradesh. He outlined the immense tourism potential that both states share, suggesting that collaborative efforts could enhance their profiles as key tourist destinations in India.
Proposed Initiatives for Collaboration
Parnaik proposed the establishment of structured exchange programs aimed at students, young entrepreneurs, and government officials, particularly in the horticulture and allied sectors. He noted that Sikkim, recognized as India’s “first fully organic state,” offers valuable lessons in sustainable practices that could benefit Arunachal Pradesh.
Highlighting the strengths of both states, Parnaik stated that Sikkim’s rapid development in tourism and sustainable practices could provide a model for Arunachal Pradesh, which possesses vast untapped resources. He suggested that deeper cooperation could yield mutual benefits in several areas, including:
- Sustainable tourism
- Eco-friendly infrastructure
- Environmental conservation
- Skill development
- Promotion of local products
Strengthening Local Bonds and Federalism
Parnaik underscored the potential for enhancing livelihoods through collaborative efforts and strengthening the bonds between the people of both states. He reiterated the importance of reinforcing the spirit of cooperative federalism, which aims to create synergies between different levels of government.
As discussions continue, both governors expressed optimism that their partnership could lead to significant advancements in cultural exchange and economic development, ultimately benefiting the residents of both Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
