J-K Chief Minister Commits to Update BJP MLAs on Development Projects
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah assured members of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that they will receive comprehensive updates regarding the status of various development projects in the region. This commitment was made during a high-level meeting held on January 12, 2024, where the focus was on enhancing infrastructure, improving irrigation facilities, and expediting flood restoration efforts in Jammu district.
During the meeting, Abdullah emphasized the importance of transparency with the BJP legislators. He promised that each MLA would receive a detailed communication outlining the current status of projects, including those that are yet to be initiated, along with reasons for any delays and a roadmap for future actions. “It should not happen that you feel a project has been taken on priority and then put on a back burner. You will receive a letter explaining what we are doing, what we have done, and what we intend to do in future, so that everyone is kept in the picture,” Abdullah stated.
Focus on Infrastructure and Flood Restoration
Abdullah highlighted that over Rs 1,400 crore has been allocated for permanent flood restoration works. He directed that funds designated for Jammu district be utilized effectively to ensure long-lasting solutions. Noting that current water levels are reminiscent of those experienced in 2014, he stressed the need for permanent restoration efforts, stating, “Our restoration works must be planned keeping that in mind so that the assets created are not washed away during the next heavy rains.”
The Chief Minister also called for the timely completion of development projects initiated under the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) plan, contingent on available funds. On the topic of irrigation, he underscored the necessity for thorough ground-level inspections to enhance water distribution to farmers, especially in the tail-end areas of canals. Abdullah urged relevant ministers to collaborate with local MLAs to prepare a timetable for these inspections.
Recognizing past challenges faced by farmers, Abdullah pointed out that inadequate desilting often hampers water access at critical times. He suggested coordinating desilting efforts with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to manage labor costs effectively while the department covers material and machinery expenses.
Support for Farmers and New Initiatives
In response to the issue of farmers relying on pumps due to insufficient canal irrigation, Abdullah announced that unauthorized electricity connections for agricultural purposes would be regularized as non-metered connections. He also confirmed that there would be no increase in electricity charges for farmers this year.
The Chief Minister directed the Jammu deputy commissioner to maximize fund utilization in the remaining months of the financial year, ensuring that development goals are met efficiently. In addition to these commitments, Abdullah laid the e-foundation stones for housing and urban development projects worth Rs 13.48 crore and inaugurated various educational and developmental initiatives totaling Rs 19.05 crore in the district.
New equipment, including truck-mounted jetting-cum-sewer suction machines, was also unveiled, along with an ambulance for the Community Health Centre in Pallanwalla. Abdullah’s actions reflect a proactive approach to addressing the urgent needs of the region while fostering collaboration with local legislators.
