Shefali Shah Reflects on Rangeela While Honoring Manoj Bajpayee
Shefali Shah, a prominent actress in Indian cinema, recently opened up about her experience with the film Rangeela, which marked her debut in 1995. In an exclusive interview, she revealed that she cannot bring herself to watch the film, attributing her reluctance to differences she had with the film’s director, Ram Gopal Varma. Shah credited her friend and fellow actor, Manoj Bajpayee, for helping her resolve her issues with Varma.
During the interview, Shah expressed her disappointment with her role in Rangeela. She stated, “I have not got myself to watch Rangeela. I will just die of embarrassment. Hence, I haven’t seen it.” She explained that she had envisioned her character to be more significant than it turned out to be, saying, “When I started shooting for it, I realised it was not even one of the important tracks of the film.”
After feeling disillusioned with her part, Shah made the decision to limit her involvement in the film. “I shot a scene, and then I told them that I can’t do more than this anymore,” she shared. This early experience led her to almost disregard Rangeela as her first film, stating, “I still don’t want to watch it. I almost pretend that it was not my first film.”
Path to Success: Collaborating with Varma Again
Despite her initial misgivings, Shah’s relationship with Varma took a positive turn when she starred in the 1998 film Satya, which became a pivotal moment in her career. She recounted how Bajpayee played a crucial role in her casting. “Manoj Bajpayee was a very dear friend of mine. He told me that RGV is making a film and he is thinking of you for this part,” she explained. Following this, Anurag Kashyap was sent by Varma to clarify her role in the film, which ultimately led her to accept the offer.
On set, Shah found Varma to be accommodating. She noted, “RGV was very gracious. He would explain the situation to us and ask us to take over.” This experience taught her an important lesson early in her career: “It is not about the length of the role but the strength of the role.”
Winning Recognition and Reflecting on Impact
Shah’s performance in Satya earned her critical acclaim, culminating in a Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics) in 1999. Reflecting on this achievement, she recalled, “At the Filmfare Awards 1999, I was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress honour.” She humorously described her outfit for the night, likening it to something Jackie Chan would wear.
When her name was announced as the winner for Best Actress Critics, she admitted it took her a moment to register. “For me, Critics is an even higher award. I didn’t even imagine it. It was insane,” she said, clearly proud of the recognition.
Shah’s career has continued to flourish, with notable performances in films such as Mohabbatein, Monsoon Wedding, Gandhi My Father, and most recently, Darlings. As she reflects on her journey, it is evident that her experiences—both positive and negative—have shaped her into a respected figure in the industry.
Her candid remarks not only provide insight into her personal growth but also highlight the importance of supportive relationships in navigating the challenges of a competitive field. Fans and critics alike eagerly anticipate her future projects and the continued evolution of her career.
