NYC Mayor Mamdani Condemns US Military Action in Venezuela
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has publicly opposed the recent military action by the United States to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. During a press conference, Mamdani described the operation as a unilateral attack on a sovereign nation, labeling it an “act of war.” His remarks followed a direct conversation with President Donald Trump, where he expressed his disapproval of the military operation.
Mamdani, who was sworn in just two days prior to this incident, revealed that he had been briefed by his administration officials on the military action aimed at Maduro and Flores, who are facing serious charges in the Southern District of New York. The mayor emphasized that the implications of such actions extend beyond Venezuela, impacting the Venezuelan community in New York City, which numbers in the tens of thousands.
“Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and international law,” Mamdani stated. He further noted that this “blatant pursuit of regime change” poses risks not only to Venezuelans abroad but also to New Yorkers. “My focus is their safety and the safety of every New Yorker,” he added, indicating that his administration would continue to monitor the situation closely.
In a statement from the Department of Justice, Pamela Bondi, the U.S. Attorney General, confirmed that Maduro and Flores have been indicted on multiple charges, including narco-terrorism conspiracy and possession of illegal firearms. “They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts,” Bondi declared, expressing gratitude to Trump for initiating the operation and acknowledging the military’s role in the mission.
The military operation has sparked debate among lawmakers. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, a senior member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, criticized the lack of congressional authorization for the military action. He called Maduro an “illegitimate dictator” but asserted that this does not justify the president’s unilateral military force.
“By acting without congressional authorization and publicly asserting U.S. control over another sovereign nation, President Trump is abusing presidential power,” Krishnamoorthi stated. He urged the Trump administration to account for the safety of U.S. personnel involved in the operation and to disclose any casualties that may have occurred.
The unfolding situation in Venezuela has raised significant questions regarding U.S. foreign policy and its implications for international relations. Critics warn that such military interventions could undermine the rule of law and weaken America’s standing in the global community, particularly in relation to powers like Russia and China.
As this complex international scenario develops, Mayor Mamdani’s firm stance highlights the tension between domestic concerns and the broader implications of U.S. military actions abroad. His commitment to safeguarding the interests of New Yorkers, particularly those from the Venezuelan community, remains at the forefront of his administration’s response to this unprecedented situation.
