Hindi Cinema’s OTT Surge Outshines Theatrical Releases in 2025
The landscape of Hindi cinema in 2025 saw a significant shift as OTT (over-the-top) platforms eclipsed traditional theatre releases. While the year featured only three notable blockbusters—Dhurandhar, Chhaava, and Saiyaara—the OTT scene was vibrant, showcasing a plethora of acclaimed films. Titles such as The Storyteller, The Great Shamsuddin Family on Jio Hotstar, and Baramulla on Netflix garnered attention, along with socially relevant narratives like Mrs on Zee5 and The Mehta Boys on Prime Video.
The disparity in audience engagement between OTT and theatrical releases has become evident. Veteran distributor-exhibitor Raj Bansal highlighted three core reasons for the decline in theatrical attendance. Filmmakers express uncertainty about their films’ prospects in theatres. Additionally, securing good screen slots and appropriate showtimes has become increasingly challenging as multiplexes prioritize certain films. Finally, the financial incentives of OTT releases, which can yield a decent price for filmmakers, further drive this trend.
Bansal elaborated on the practical advantages of OTT platforms, stating, “At most, you are paying just Rs 10 per movie for a family to watch it at home, at your convenience. But for a theatrical watch, you need to spend on tickets, travel, parking, and food.” The financial burden of a cinema outing has shifted audience preferences towards more economical home-viewing options.
Actress Madhuri Dixit Nene, who appeared in the OTT film Maja Ma, echoed this sentiment. She noted that busy schedules make it difficult for people to catch films in theatres, especially on weekdays. The convenience and cost-effectiveness of OTT platforms have transformed how audiences consume cinema.
Despite the surge in OTT releases, there remains a significant portion of films initially intended for theatres. Bansal estimated that around 20 percent of upcoming films still aim for theatrical releases, with OTT being a secondary option. Filmmaker Ananth Narayanan Mahadevan, known for The Storyteller, expressed a desire for theatrical opportunities. He stated, “The Storyteller had all the elements of a theatrical release… but Jio Studios decided on the OTT route. Now I think that this was a blessing in disguise!”
Directors like Aditya Suhas Jambhale, who helmed Baramulla, acknowledged the allure of the big screen but recognized the need to support producers in their decisions. He remarked, “Netflix is a classy platform, and my film saw release in 190 countries.” This global reach underscores the potential of OTT platforms to connect films with a broader audience.
Veteran actor Boman Irani weighed in on the evolution of viewing habits. Initially skeptical about online releases, he reflected on how beloved films from past decades found their audience on television. Irani noted, “All our favourite films, Indian or international, have been seen most on television.”
Determining the success of films on OTT platforms poses a challenge. Bansal pointed out that, while box office numbers can quickly define a theatrical film’s fate, OTT films are often measured by audience response rather than financial returns. Irani added, “The biggest benefit of OTT is that there is no pressure on you. It’s been a great year watching so many extraordinary films that otherwise may not have been made at all.”
As the industry adapts to changing viewer preferences, it is clear that the rise of OTT platforms has reshaped the Hindi cinema landscape. The focus on accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and global reach continues to drive filmmakers towards digital releases, with audiences embracing the flexibility that comes with watching films from home.
