Dhurandhar’s Screen Time Cut by 50% for Ikkis Release
The upcoming release of the film Ikkis will significantly impact the screening schedule of Dhurandhar, with many single-screen theatres reducing its showings by 50% starting January 1, 2026. This decision appears to favor Ikkis, which features a cast including the late Dharmendra and Agastya Nanda. According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the adjustments stem from disputes over screen-sharing as Dhurandhar, having benefitted from strong distributor backing, has dominated several local cinemas.
As the first major release of 2026, Ikkis is distributed by Jio Studios, which also produced Dhurandhar. This dual role has enabled a smoother transition for Ikkis into theatres without the previous struggles faced by rival films. An industry source revealed that Ikkis will be allocated approximately 30% to 40% of available screen time, particularly in cinemas with multiple screens.
In practical terms, this translates to specific requests for showings: cinemas with two screens will host four showings of Ikkis, while those with three screens will have six. Larger multiplexes with four screens are set to feature eight showings, and venues featuring five screens or more will host ten or more shows. Interestingly, the exhibition strategy appears to downplay early morning showings, likely based on expectations that Ikkis will gain traction through word-of-mouth rather than immediate audience turnout.
The ticket pricing strategy also reflects this shift, with theatres instructed to maintain regular weekend rates for Ikkis, making it more accessible to audiences. A trade expert noted that Ikkis may even secure more shows in key markets, such as Mumbai, compared to Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, despite the latter’s romantic comedy appeal.
Analysis of the current show listings indicates that Dhurandhar will experience a notable reduction in its screenings, dropping from four to two shows daily at various single-screen locations, including Gold Cinema Santacruz and Inox Nakshatra Dadar. Conversely, Ikkis will be showcased four times daily at larger venues like the 819-seater Galaxy theatre.
Some single-screen theatres are expected to opt out of showing Ikkis due to limited distribution, while others in high-demand areas may continue to prioritize Dhurandhar. In select theatres across Mumbai, such as Anand and Gold Cinema Borivali, screenings will be divided solely between Dhurandhar and another local film, Krantijyoti Vidyalay Marathi Madhyam, catering to specific audience preferences.
As the cinema landscape evolves with the release of Ikkis, its success could signal a shift in audience preferences and box office dynamics for films competing in the same market.
