A significant free health and eye check-up camp took place on December 28, 2023, at Hegde’s Private English Medium Senior Primary School in Kayar Palke, a rural area in Maninalkur village, Bantwal taluk. The event, which attracted hundreds of local residents, provided essential medical services to the community.

Organized by a coalition of groups including Shri Poornananda Seva Pratishthana, Kudla Deshastha Adya Gowda Brahmin Sangha, Hegde’s School, and KMC Hospital in Mangaluru, the camp operated from 09:30 to 13:30. Attendees received a variety of services, including general health examinations, children’s health assessments, and screenings for bone and joint issues, ENT concerns, cancer, and heart health.

Patients also benefited from gynaecological consultations, blood pressure and diabetes monitoring, free ECG tests, and the distribution of medicines and discounted spectacles. The event was conducted by experienced doctors from KMC, and arrangements were made to accommodate both male and female patients. Those requiring further treatment were referred to KMC Hospital for specialized care under the Green Card scheme, which offers reduced rates for surgeries and internal care.

D. Ramesh Nayak, director of Shri Poornananda Seva Pratishthana, emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating, “Free health camps in rural areas are extremely effective. They raise awareness about symptoms and preventive measures, which is crucial for society.” He pointed out the increasing prevalence of serious health conditions like heart attacks and strokes, underscoring the need for regular screenings.

Dr. Vijayalakshmi Nayak echoed this sentiment, highlighting the role of social responsibility in fostering a healthy community. She remarked, “Organising such a responsible health camp within the school premises is immensely beneficial for villagers.”

The camp was not only a medical outreach but also a community gathering. The program included a prayer led by Sujata Samant, while Bhaskar from the Dharmasthala Rural Development Project served as the announcer. Several dignitaries attended, including members of the local school management and community leaders.

Under the guidance of Bhaskar Prabhu and Vasudev Prabhu Kordotu, the camp ran smoothly, with support from Murali Prabhu Vagga and KMC’s Kartik Nayak. Residents from Minaldot Ashram and Nammane Charitable Trust also participated, receiving health check-ups and educational sessions on disease prevention.

During an outreach visit, officials distributed essential items and fresh fruits to the ashram residents, reinforcing the humanitarian aspect of the initiative. The officials engaged with the residents, inquiring about their health and daily needs, and facilitated their attendance at the health camp.

This initiative aimed to enhance health awareness among underprivileged and homeless individuals, integrating them into the broader social framework. Organizers stated, “This humanitarian service is intended to ensure that every member of society can lead a healthy and dignified life.”

The success of the camp has been widely praised, highlighting the commitment of community organizations to social welfare and inclusive healthcare.
