Kendrick Perkins Critiques Chet Holmgren After Spurs’ Victory
The rivalry between young NBA talents Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama intensified following a decisive matchup on December 25, 2023. The San Antonio Spurs triumphed over the Oklahoma City Thunder with a score of 117-102, leading to pointed criticism from ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins regarding Holmgren’s performance.
In the aftermath of the game, Perkins questioned Holmgren’s toughness, suggesting that the Thunder big man struggled to match the intensity displayed by Wembanyama, the Spurs’ standout rookie. Perkins referenced a specific moment during the game where Wembanyama demonstrated physical dominance over Holmgren, celebrating after Holmgren missed a bonus shot. This incident, according to Perkins, highlighted a disparity in the competitive spirit between the two players.
As the season progresses, the anticipation builds for future encounters between the Thunder and Spurs. The two teams are scheduled to face off again at Paycom Center on January 13, 2024, followed by another game at Frost Bank Center on February 4, 2024. These upcoming matchups are expected to further magnify the Holmgren-Wembanyama rivalry, even as Holmgren himself downplays the notion of a rivalry.
In an interview with ESPN‘s Malika Andrews prior to the Christmas Day game, Holmgren indicated that he has not engaged in significant interaction with Wembanyama, stating that he has never exchanged “a full sentence” with the French phenom. This lack of personal connection suggests that any rivalry is more a product of media speculation than a reflection of their professional relationship.
Statistically, Wembanyama has outperformed Holmgren in their three encounters this season. The Spurs’ rookie is averaging 17.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game against the Thunder. In contrast, Holmgren’s numbers stand at 11.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game in the same series. This performance gap has likely contributed to the perception of Wembanyama as the superior player in their matchups thus far.
As both players continue to develop their skills and adapt to the NBA’s competitive landscape, their performances in the upcoming games will be closely scrutinized. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see whether Holmgren can rise to the challenge and enhance his game against a formidable opponent like Wembanyama.
