Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi marked the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on December 25, 2025, by reflecting on his significant contributions to India’s development. Highlighting Vajpayee’s pivotal role in establishing India as a nuclear power, Saraogi emphasized the lasting impact of various initiatives launched during Vajpayee’s tenure.

Legacy of Development Initiatives

Speaking to the media, Saraogi noted that Vajpayee’s leadership saw the implementation of numerous schemes that have become foundational to the rural economy. “Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a statesman and a leader admired by all party members. His contribution towards making India a nuclear power is immense,” he stated. He specifically mentioned the Pokhran nuclear tests as a landmark achievement.

Vajpayee’s initiatives, such as the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (Education for All campaign) and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (Prime Minister’s Rural Roads Scheme), have significantly transformed rural infrastructure and access to education. “These schemes have become the backbone of the rural economy today,” Saraogi said.

Impact on Language and Education

In addition, Saraogi highlighted Vajpayee’s decision to include Maithili in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, which he argued has played a crucial role in the cultural and educational advancement of the Mithila region. “Mithila will always be indebted to Atal Ji. It was Atal Ji who included Maithili in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, and today, students from Mithila and even from southern states are adopting Maithili to succeed in competitive examinations,” Saraogi explained, noting the rise of students achieving prestigious positions such as District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police.

Reflecting on the influence of Vajpayee’s legacy, Saraogi mentioned current Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his efforts to continue the vision set forth by Vajpayee. “Atal Ji made India a nuclear power. But today, Prime Minister Modi has made India the fourth-largest military and economic power,” he said. Saraogi quoted Vajpayee’s words in Parliament during a vote of no confidence, stating, “Today you are laughing, but in the coming times, the entire country will be with the BJP.” He believes this vision is now being realized under Modi’s leadership.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He served as Prime Minister three times: first for 13 days in 1996, then for 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and finally for a full term from 1999 to 2004. Vajpayee was also India’s External Affairs Minister from 1977 to 1979. He passed away on August 16, 2018, at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi, leaving behind a significant political legacy as the first non-Congress prime minister to serve a full term.
