Governor and Chief Minister Honor Vajpayee on His Birth Anniversary
On January 25, 2024, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu commemorated the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at The Ridge in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The event drew significant attention as leaders from various political backgrounds gathered to pay floral tributes to a figure widely regarded as a unifying force in Indian politics.
Honoring a National Leader
During the tribute, Governor Shukla emphasized Vajpayee’s legacy as a leader who transcended political divides. He remarked that Vajpayee’s approach demonstrated that while politics may involve competition, it should never devolve into hostility. Shukla described the former Prime Minister’s social and political life as characterized by “grace, joy, and dignity,” asserting that his conduct should serve as a guiding example for contemporary leaders.
Shukla praised Vajpayee as a “towering statesman” and a “true nationalist,” noting his unwavering commitment to safeguarding national interests. He highlighted Vajpayee’s special relationship with Himachal Pradesh, referring to it as his “second home.” The Governor expressed that Vajpayee’s invaluable contributions to the country would be remembered for generations.
A Legacy of Oratory and Poetry
Chief Minister Sukhu also paid homage to Vajpayee at his statue on The Ridge, representing the people of Himachal Pradesh. Sukhu characterized Vajpayee as an “extraordinary statesman,” a “powerful orator,” and a “gifted poet.” His remarks reflected the profound impact Vajpayee had on Indian politics and society.
Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur and state BJP president Dr Rajeev Bindal were among those who joined in the floral tributes. Thakur recalled Vajpayee’s close ties to Himachal Pradesh, noting that he always considered the state as a significant part of his identity. He pointed out that Vajpayee’s industrial package played a crucial role in transforming Baddi in the Solan district into a prominent pharmaceutical hub, a development that significantly benefited the region.
The tributes at The Ridge not only celebrated Vajpayee’s life but also highlighted his enduring influence on the political landscape of India. As leaders gathered to express their respect, the ceremony served as a reminder of the values of unity and dignity in political discourse.
