Trump Unveils ‘Golden Fleet’ Initiative with New Battleships

During World War II, battleships like the Iowa-class were at the forefront of naval warfare, with modernized versions weighing approximately 60,000 tons. Currently, the U.S. Navy operates 74 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, versatile ships that serve various roles, including air defense and missile launching.

During his first term, Trump sought to shift the Navy back to steam-powered catapults for aircraft carriers, highlighting his hands-on approach to naval design. In 2020, he visited a shipyard working on the now-defunct Constellation-class frigate, stating, “I looked at it and said, ‘That’s a terrible-looking ship, let’s make it beautiful.'”

The announcement arrives following the cancellation of a previous plan to develop a smaller battleship, which was scrapped due to delays and budget overruns. Instead, the Navy will utilize a modified Coast Guard cutter that was under production until recently.
