Liverpool’s Alexander Isak Faces Indefinite Absence After Surgery
Liverpool striker Alexander Isak will be sidelined indefinitely following surgery on a broken ankle and fibula. The injury occurred during a match against Tottenham Hotspur on March 9, 2024, when Isak scored the opening goal in a 2-1 victory. After sustaining the injury from a tackle, he was forced to leave the pitch and subsequently underwent surgery on March 11.
According to a statement from Liverpool FC, “After diagnosis, an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture.” The club confirmed that Isak’s rehabilitation will continue at the AXA Training Centre, but no specific timeline for his return has been established.
Isak’s absence is likely to have significant implications not only for Liverpool’s current season but also for Sweden’s prospects in the upcoming European playoffs. Sweden is set to face Ukraine in the semifinals in March, and losing their star striker represents a considerable setback for the national team.
The 26-year-old forward’s injury adds to a challenging season. After a protracted transfer from Newcastle United last summer, Isak joined Liverpool in September without a full preseason. He struggled to regain form, which was further complicated by a groin injury that kept him out of action for a month. In total, he has made just 10 starts for Liverpool, netting three goals.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot will now rely on other players to fill the void left by Isak. Notably, Mohamed Salah is also unavailable due to his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. In his absence, Hugo Ekitike, another new addition to the squad, may need to step up. The French international has been in impressive form, scoring 11 goals this season, including five in his last three league matches.
Despite the setbacks, Liverpool has shown resilience, currently enjoying a six-game unbeaten streak. After a rough patch from September to November, where they lost six out of seven matches, the team has climbed back to fifth place in the Premier League, level on points with Chelsea in fourth. The recent victories against Brighton and Tottenham have reinvigorated the club’s title defense ambitions.
As Liverpool navigates this challenging period, the focus will be on how quickly Isak can return and what impact it will have on both club and national team ambitions.
