Mark Carney Advocates for Stronger Trade Ties with India
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized the importance of enhancing trade relationships with nations like India as part of a broader strategy to diversify Canada’s economic partnerships. In a recent interview with the state broadcaster CBC, Carney noted that initiating negotiations for a free trade agreement with India aligns with Canada’s interests and has garnered respect from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney, who assumed office in March 2023, indicated that Canada has been overly reliant on the United States for trade. “We have too many eggs in the American basket. We would like to maintain that relationship and grow others. We absolutely need to grow others,” he stated, highlighting the necessity of fostering connections with countries such as India, China, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.
India and Canada have been working towards revitalizing their bilateral ties, with a significant meeting between Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis in June 2023. Their discussions led to a renewed commitment to deepen economic cooperation, culminating in an announcement at the recent G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg. The two leaders revealed plans to launch negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at boosting two-way trade to CA$70 billion by 2030.
Carney accepted Modi’s invitation to visit India, with the trip anticipated to take place in the first quarter of 2024. The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement expressing confidence that the CEPA would serve as a significant economic anchor between the two nations.
Previous negotiations on a CEPA were set aside in favor of the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) in 2022, intended to capitalize on immediate trade opportunities. However, talks were “paused” in August 2023 following comments from then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who cited “credible allegations” linking Indian agents to the killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. India dismissed these claims as “absurd,” resulting in a sharp decline in diplomatic relations.
As Canada seeks to strengthen its global trade ties, the potential agreement with India represents a significant step toward achieving a more balanced economic strategy. The growing partnership could not only enhance trade but also foster greater cooperation on security and other critical issues.
The path ahead may require navigating complex geopolitical landscapes, but Carney’s administration appears determined to build a more diversified trade framework that extends beyond traditional allies. As discussions unfold, both nations are poised to explore the benefits of a strengthened economic relationship.
