Srinagar’s Sunday Market Thrives as Winter Demand Soars
The weekly Sunday Market in Srinagar has become a bustling hub as residents seek warm clothing and essential supplies amid the freezing temperatures gripping the region. On December 7, 2023, thousands of shoppers flocked to the market, stretching from TRC to the Jahangir Chowk flyover, showcasing the enduring appeal of this local institution.
A Seasonal Surge in Shopping
Despite biting cold conditions, shoppers wrapped in traditional pherans and woollen garments navigated through the stalls, eager to find affordable jackets, blankets, and footwear. The market’s vibrant atmosphere not only reflects the winter rush but also highlights the emotional connection that the people of Kashmir have with this weekly gathering. Irfan Ahmad, a vendor selling jackets, remarked, “People wait for Sundays the way they wait for festivals. Even today, when it felt like the cold was cutting through our bones, the rush was unbelievable.”
Initially established as a modest flea market focused on second-hand goods, the Sunday Market has dramatically evolved. It now features a diverse range of products, from branded winter jackets to electronics and household essentials. The transformation illustrates the market’s growth into a multi-class shopping destination, where established traders from across Srinagar join every week to cater to the surge in customer footfall.
More Than Just Shopping
For many shoppers, the Sunday Market offers more than just clothing and household items. Food carts have become an integral part of the experience, with vendors serving a variety of hot meals and snacks. The market is filled with enticing aromas, from steaming peanut cones to spicy biryani, drawing in crowds eager to warm up with nourishing food. A snack seller from Uttar Pradesh noted, “This is the day we earn more than the whole week. People walk for kilometres in the market, and they want something warm to eat.”
The social dynamics of the market provide a snapshot of community life in Kashmir. Families stroll together, children enjoy treats, and tourists sample local flavours while bargaining with vendors. Yet, the influx of visitors does present challenges. Heavy congestion often slows traffic along Residency Road and Jahangir Chowk, with pedestrians and vehicles vying for space.
Some shoppers, such as Mohammad Ashraf, believe that improved organization could enhance the experience. “If the stalls are organised and space is maintained properly, people can move more freely,” he stated. His sentiments were echoed by numerous vendors, who called for better infrastructure, dedicated vendor zones, and improved waste management.
Recognizing the market’s importance could lead to its evolution into a formally supported cultural and commercial asset for Srinagar. With proper planning, the Sunday Market could not only sustain livelihoods but also serve as a vibrant community gathering point for years to come.
