Goa Nightclub Fire Claims 25 Lives, FIR Registered Against Owners
A tragic fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa has resulted in the loss of 25 lives, prompting police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against the nightclub’s owners and event organizers. The incident, which occurred shortly after midnight, has drawn significant attention and led to the detention of local panchayat leader, Roshan Redkar.
The fire broke out at the popular nightclub located in Arpora village, approximately 25 kilometers from the state capital, Panaji. Among the deceased are four tourists and 14 staff members, while the identities of the remaining seven victims are still being confirmed by authorities.
Investigation Underway
According to a senior police officer, FIRs have been filed against Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra, the nightclub’s owners, as well as the club’s manager and the event organizers. The FIR cites various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, a legal framework governing criminal law in India.
Redkar, the sarpanch of Arpora-Nagoa Panchayat, has been detained for his role in issuing a trade license for the nightclub back in 2013. In a statement, he noted a history of disputes between the club’s owners, which included mutual complaints filed with the panchayat. Redkar mentioned that inspections had revealed the club lacked the necessary permissions for its construction.
“The panchayat had issued a demolition notice, but it was stayed by officials from the Directorate of Panchayats,” Redkar explained. This raises serious questions about compliance and oversight in the management of such venues.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident to determine the cause of the fire and to establish accountability. He confirmed that all six individuals who sustained injuries are in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical care.
Details of the Incident
The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire originated on the first floor of the nightclub. Chief Minister Sawant highlighted that congestion and narrow exits contributed to the chaotic situation, preventing patrons from evacuating safely. Many individuals reportedly attempted to escape to the ground floor, only to find themselves trapped.
The nightclub, which opened its doors in 2022, has been a favored destination for both locals and tourists, drawing large crowds to its parties and events. The incident has raised concerns over safety regulations and the enforcement of building codes in entertainment venues across Goa.
As the investigation unfolds, the government is facing pressure to ensure that accountability is established and that measures are put in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.
