Congress Alleges Political Pressure Led to Rejection of Nomination Papers

Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira has formally alleged that political pressure influenced the rejection of five nomination papers for the upcoming elections in the Bholath block samiti. In a letter addressed to Raj Kamal, the State Election Commissioner, Khaira claimed that both the returning officer (RO) and assistant returning officer (ARO) failed to adhere to proper electoral procedures.

The candidates whose nominations were rejected include Puran Singh from Zone 17 Lakhan Ke Padde, Joban Singh and Gurjit Singh from Zone 18 Chakoke, Hardev Singh and Kamaljit Kaur from Zone 10 Nangal Lubana, and Rajinder Kaur from Zone 21 Padde Bet. According to Khaira, the officers publicly displayed the list of rejected nominations at 17:30, then vacated the office without providing adequate explanation for their decisions.

Khaira criticized the actions of the election officials, stating they “left the office premises without passing any logical orders” detailing the grounds for rejection. He emphasized the importance of transparency in the electoral process and urged the State Election Commissioner to instruct the relevant returning officers to provide the rejection orders. This would enable the candidates to seek legal recourse from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The situation raises significant concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process in Punjab. Khaira’s claims highlight the potential influence of political dynamics on administrative actions, a scenario that could undermine public trust in the electoral system. The Congress party is now faced with the challenge of addressing these allegations and ensuring that its candidates have the opportunity to contest the elections fairly.

As the election date approaches, the resolution of this issue will be critical for maintaining the legitimacy of the electoral process in the region. The outcome of any legal actions taken by the affected candidates could set important precedents for future elections in Punjab.
