NBC Criticized for Briefly Airing Lil Jon’s Thanksgiving Halftime Show
NBC has come under fire for airing only a brief 15-second highlight of rapper Lil Jon‘s halftime performance during the NFL Thanksgiving game on November 27, 2023. The event took place at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, where the Baltimore Ravens faced off against the Cincinnati Bengals. The game concluded with the Bengals winning decisively, 32-14.
Instead of showcasing the entire performance by the 54-year-old artist, NBC opted to devote airtime to a tribute honoring the legendary coach John Madden. The tribute, narrated by Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, featured interviews with notable players, including Gus Otto, Phil Villapiano, Art Shell, and Joe Gibbs. Following the tribute, NBC aired a short clip of Lil Jon performing his hit song “Turn Down For What,” before transitioning to commercial advertisements.
Fans expressed their disappointment, feeling let down by the minimal coverage of the highly anticipated halftime show. According to a report by USA Today, many viewers had expected to see the full performance instead of a mere highlight. This decision to limit coverage is not unprecedented for NBC. Since 2013, the network has routinely aired a feature presentation during halftime, often relegating the actual performances to highlight clips.
In previous years, similar situations occurred with other artists. In 2024, the performance by Lindsey Stirling was also not aired in full, while Steve Aoki‘s performance in 2023 during the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks faced comparable treatment. On the same day as Lil Jon’s performance, Post Malone and Jack White also performed during two other NFL games, with Malone taking the stage during the Dallas Cowboys versus Kansas City Chiefs game and White performing during the Detroit Lions’ matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
Lil Jon, born Jonathan H. Smith, is recognized as a pioneer of the crunk hip-hop sub-genre that gained popularity in the early 2000s. His career began in 1993 when he was signed by Jermaine Dupri to So So Def Recordings. In 1996, he formed Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz, a group credited with establishing the crunk sound in hip-hop. Over the years, they released several hits, including “I Like Dem Girlz,” “Shawty Freak a Lil Sumthin,” and “Who U Wit?”
In 2010, Lil Jon released his debut solo album, Crunk Rock, which featured the chart-topping single “Turn Down For What.” The collaboration with DJ Snake has garnered significant acclaim, achieving eight platinum certifications in the United States. The accompanying music video has amassed over 1.2 billion views on YouTube and was nominated for Best Music Video at the 2015 Grammy Awards.
Beyond music, Lil Jon has ventured into various business initiatives, including an energy drink company named Crunk and a wine label. As of now, his estimated net worth is around $30 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
The backlash against NBC highlights ongoing tensions between broadcasting decisions and audience expectations, particularly during high-profile events such as the NFL Thanksgiving halftime show. As the network continues to navigate these complex choices, fans remain hopeful for more comprehensive coverage of the performances they eagerly anticipate.
