Jaunpur Leads Crackdown on Vehicles Displaying Caste-related Text

The district of Jaunpur has emerged as a leader in a significant enforcement operation aimed at vehicles displaying caste-related or provocative text. On November 15, 2023, authorities conducted a comprehensive drive across Jaunpur, Ghazipur, and Chandauli districts, resulting in substantial penalties and vehicle seizures.

The operation, led by Vaibhav Krishna, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Varanasi range, targeted a range of violations, particularly focusing on vehicles that exhibited caste-based language or other inflammatory wording. A total of 8,986 vehicles were challaned during this initiative, with 1,652 vehicles seized and fines totaling ₹30.24 lakh imposed.

Details of the Enforcement Action

The enforcement drive was executed simultaneously across the three districts. Checkpoints were strategically established to ensure that violators could not evade the crackdown. In Jaunpur, the police issued 724 challans and seized 35 vehicles for displaying inappropriate text. Fines in this district amounted to ₹98,500.

Meanwhile, Ghazipur saw 229 vehicles challaned, with fines totaling ₹4,58,000, and 14 vehicles seized for similar offenses. In Chandauli, authorities issued 133 challans, imposed fines of ₹17,000, and seized 21 vehicles.

Jaunpur recorded the highest number of violations, with 759 vehicles failing to comply with standards regarding caste-related phrases. This focused effort highlights the ongoing commitment to maintaining public order and discouraging divisive rhetoric.

Additional Violations Targeted

In addition to the crackdown on caste-related text, the operation also addressed unauthorized vehicle operations and safety violations. The police in Jaunpur challaned 154 buses and seized 37, while 426 tempos faced penalties and 174 were seized. Ghazipur’s police tackled 28 buses and 103 tempos, leading to considerable seizures.

The enforcement measures extended to overloading issues as well. In Jaunpur, 248 trucks were challaned, with 106 seized. Ghazipur and Chandauli reported 66 and 210 trucks challaned, respectively, with significant numbers seized in both areas.

The operation also targeted vehicles fitted with black films and pressure horns. Across the three districts, 377 vehicles were challaned, 510 had black films removed, and 24 vehicles were seized. The total fines collected for these violations reached ₹3,37,000.

DIG Vaibhav Krishna emphasized the importance of ongoing vigilance. He instructed station officers and police outpost in-charges to maintain strict oversight in their respective areas and ensure continuous enforcement against all traffic violations. This proactive approach aims to enhance road safety and uphold social harmony within the community.
