Germany Bans ‘Muslim Interactive’ Group Over Extremist Activities
Germany has officially banned the group known as Muslim Interactive, classifying it as an extremist organization. The group advocates for the overthrow of the German state and the establishment of a caliphate, rejecting the principles of Germany’s constitutional democracy in favor of Sharia law. This move comes as part of broader efforts by German authorities to combat radicalization and uphold democratic values.
Founded around 2020, Muslim Interactive is considered an offshoot of Hizb ut Tahrir (HuT), a pan-Islamist organization banned in several countries, including Germany. HuT was outlawed in 2003 after it incited violence against Jewish communities. The operations of Muslim Interactive are primarily concentrated in Hamburg and Berlin, where it uses social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram to engage with young Muslims, particularly those aged 15 to 25.
The group presents itself as a voice for Muslims facing discrimination in Germany, leveraging events such as the Israel-Palestine conflict and incidents of Quran desecration to bolster its narrative. In its promotional content, Muslim Interactive portrays itself as a defender of Islamic values and has organized demonstrations under provocative slogans. One such rally in 2024, titled “Don’t Obey the Liars,” drew over 1,000 participants in Hamburg, many of whom displayed signs advocating for a caliphate and shouted “Allahu Akbar.”
At the forefront of Muslim Interactive is Joe Adade Boateng, known as Raheem. The 25-year-old German citizen presents himself with a polished image, resembling a social media influencer more than a traditional religious leader. He frequently addresses the perceived threats faced by Muslims in Germany, claiming, “We demand the right to have our own Muslim lifestyle!” Boateng has also criticized the rights afforded to women and minorities in Germany, positioning himself as a controversial figure among both supporters and detractors.
The German government has expressed serious concerns regarding the group’s activities. The Interior Ministry has stated that Muslim Interactive promotes antisemitism and discrimination against women and sexual minorities. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that the group represents a fundamental threat to Germany’s democratic values and human rights, asserting, “We will respond with the full force of the law to anyone who aggressively calls for a caliphate on our streets.”
In addition to the ban on Muslim Interactive, the German government is currently investigating two other organizations, Generation Islam and Reality Islam, for similar extremist activities. The Interior Ministry’s statement highlighted that the ideology propagated by these groups is incompatible with the principles of gender equality and freedom of sexual orientation.
The decision to outlaw Muslim Interactive follows a series of incidents that have raised alarm among lawmakers. In 2023, the group was scrutinized for instigating violent riots during an unsanctioned demonstration, resulting in injuries to three police officers. Furthermore, allegations surfaced that members of the group coerced high school students to convert to Islam.
Experts on extremism have noted the appeal that Muslim Interactive holds for certain demographics, particularly young men. Eren Güvercin, an Islamism expert, remarked on the group’s ability to blend contemporary culture with its radical ideology, making it more relatable to the youth. Güvercin described Boateng as a “flamboyant personality” who captivates young audiences with a charismatic approach.
As the German government moves to disband Muslim Interactive and confiscate its assets, the emphasis remains on preserving the integrity of democratic society. The actions taken against this group reflect a broader commitment to combatting extremism and ensuring that human rights are upheld for all citizens.
This ban is a significant step in Germany’s ongoing efforts to address radical ideologies and reinforce the importance of tolerance and respect within its diverse society.
