China Offers Expertise to Help Delhi Combat Air Pollution Crisis
As Delhi grapples with worsening air quality, the Chinese government has extended an offer of assistance to help combat the city’s pervasive pollution. Yu Jing, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, expressed this support on social media platform X, stating, “China once struggled with severe smog, too. We stand ready to share our journey toward blue skies — and believe India will get there soon.” This message highlights China’s transition from severe pollution issues to cleaner air over the past decade.
Ten years ago, Beijing faced a similar crisis, declaring a “war on pollution” in 2013. The Chinese government implemented stringent measures that included replacing diesel-powered buses with electric ones and promoting electric vehicles. These initiatives, along with a significant shift toward clean energy, resulted in a dramatic reduction in smog levels across major cities like Beijing and Shanghai. The impact of these changes has been significant, with life expectancy reportedly increasing by 4.6 years as a result of improved air quality.
Delhi is currently experiencing an alarming rise in air pollution, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring past 400 in various regions, categorizing it as “severe.” Meteorologists have warned that such poor air quality can lead to serious health issues, including respiratory illnesses and infections affecting the throat and eyes. The situation has prompted Delhi’s authorities to explore various methods for air purification, such as cloud seeding and the use of sprinklers to reduce emissions.
The primary challenge facing Delhi appears to be the effective implementation of pollution control measures. While Beijing executed its pollution reduction strategies decisively, Delhi has often found itself mired in debate and delayed action. For instance, during the festival of Diwali, pollution levels spike as celebrations lead to increased emissions from fireworks and other activities. Each year, this pattern repeats, underscoring the need for urgent and coordinated efforts to address the issue.
China’s offer of assistance serves as a reminder that timely action is critical in the fight against air pollution. The successful strategies employed by Beijing could provide valuable insights for Delhi as it seeks to improve its air quality and safeguard public health. The Chinese experience illustrates that with the right measures and commitment, it is possible to achieve significant progress in reducing smog levels.
As Delhi continues to struggle with air pollution, the city’s leaders may need to take cues from their Chinese counterparts to effect meaningful change. The path to cleaner air requires not only innovative solutions but also a determined and swift response to the ongoing crisis.
